Cancer treatment is only one part of the journey. For many survivors, recovery continues long after surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. One of the most common yet often overlooked complications is lymphedema—a condition that can cause persistent swelling, discomfort, reduced mobility, and a significant impact on quality of life if left untreated.
To address this critical need, Astitva Foundation, in collaboration with Kalyan Singh Super Specialty Cancer Institute (KSSSCI), Lucknow, successfully conducted a free lymphedema prevention and treatment clinic for cancer patients on 8 July. As part of this compassionate initiative, pressure stockings and breast prostheses were distributed to eligible patients, helping improve comfort, confidence, and rehabilitation after cancer treatment.
Supporting Cancer Survivors Beyond Treatment
At Astitva Foundation, we believe that every cancer survivor deserves comprehensive post-treatment care. While defeating cancer is a major milestone, managing its long-term effects is equally important. Lymphedema is one such condition that requires early diagnosis, timely intervention, and continuous care.
Through this dedicated clinic, cancer survivors received expert evaluation, education, and guidance to identify early signs of lymphedema and prevent its progression. The initiative focused on empowering patients with knowledge while ensuring access to specialized rehabilitation services.
Why Early Detection of Lymphedema Matters
Lymphedema develops when the lymphatic system is damaged or blocked, often following cancer surgery or radiation therapy. It commonly affects patients treated for breast cancer, gynecological cancers, melanoma, and several other cancers involving lymph node removal.
Without early diagnosis, lymphedema can lead to the following:
- Persistent swelling in the arms or legs
- Pain, heaviness, and discomfort
- Reduced flexibility and movement
- Recurrent skin infections
- Difficulty performing daily activities
- Emotional and psychological distress
The encouraging news is that early detection and timely management can significantly reduce complications, improve mobility, and enhance the overall quality of life for cancer survivors.
Advanced Screening with Modern Imaging Technology
The clinic offered specialized Free lymphoedema screening supported by advanced fluorescence imaging technology, enabling healthcare professionals to detect lymphatic changes at an early stage.
This innovative approach allows the following:
- Early identification of lymphatic dysfunction
- Personalized treatment planning
- Better monitoring of disease progression
- Improved long-term rehabilitation outcomes
Patients also received valuable counseling on lifestyle modifications, preventive exercises, skin care, and self-management techniques to minimize the risk of developing severe lymphedema.
Pressure Stockings and Breast Prostheses Distribution
A significant highlight of the initiative was the distribution of pressure stockings and breast prostheses to eligible cancer survivors.
Pressure stockings help:
- Improve lymphatic circulation
- Reduce swelling
- Prevent fluid accumulation
- Support daily mobility and comfort
Breast Prostheses provide:
- Physical balance after mastectomy
- Improved posture
- Enhanced confidence and body image
- Greater comfort in daily life
These essential rehabilitation aids play a vital role in helping survivors regain independence and return to their normal routines with dignity.
A Monthly Commitment to Cancer Rehabilitation
This initiative is not a one-time event. The Free Lymphedema Prevention and Treatment Clinic will continue to serve patients every month.
